Company History
Prior to starting Back to Basics Fertilizer, owner Marc Davis worked as a mechanic in Indianapolis for a well-known asphalt company for 15 years. In 2004 he decided to start a lawn care and landscape business. He worked at Mad Mowing part time for two years before quitting his mechanics job and going full time. “I put my heart and soul into this business and loved it,” he said, “having no regrets of leaving my past career.” At start of the season of 2020, Marc decided to sell the mowing and landscaping part of the business and focused more on the lawn fertilization and weed control services.
Since 2006 Marc acquired his certified applicators license and began offering lawn fertilization services, which remains a focus of the business today. Marc’s wife, Shawn, splits her time between the family business and her career of 20 years, oral surgery. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you’ll find Shawn at Back to Basics Fertilizer.
Hers is the friendly, warm voice you’ll hear answering the phone. She is known for providing informational newsletters to their customers, which are full of helpful tips and real-time notifications of pests or diseases inflicting area lawns. Together they make an unbeatable team, offering professional outdoor services and customer service. They have 3 children and 3 grandchildren, who they hope one day will join and continue the family business.

Continuing Education
To remain certified and to expand his knowledge, Marc takes continuing education and training classes in fertilization and weed control. This has allowed him to be up to date on the latest products and techniques and to handle individual situations that arise during his visits to clients’ property. “I have always strived on getting that perfect lawn,” he said. Finding a core line of products that gives him the results he wants has proved to be a game changer for him and his business.
